The Synopsis:
Tristan Lopez is loyal to his brothers. He doesn’t really have a choice, born into a gang that has a chokehold on every kid that roams its streets. He gave his life to them willingly, knowing if he did then one day this kingdom, led by boys drunk with power and ruled by fear, would all be his.
He was loyal through it all. Loyal when prison took his dad away. Loyal when his face was touched by the cold metal of the rival gang’s gun. Loyal even though his mom begged him to run the moment she returned home from rehab.
He thought about becoming someone else. It was hard not to crave the life of a regular 17-year-old. It’s the only reason he stayed in school—to pretend. But he always fell back in line.
Loyal.
Riley Rojas didn’t belong in Tristan’s real world. She should have only been part of the fantasy, one of the many faces he got to pretend with amidst rows of metal chairs and desks and whiteboards with assignments. But there she was, moving boxes from the back of an old pick-up into a house Tristan had shot up on a dare with his friends only a few months before.
Tall enough to look him in the eyes and strong enough to fill his shadow, Riley took up space on his streets, her loud mouth fearless in the face of the gang leaders who terrified everyone else. She pushed Tristan around on the hard court, and she balled better than his friends—better than him sometimes. She challenged him. She needed him. He liked it. And when her pale blue eyes stared into his, he quit wanting to pretend.
He couldn’t ask her to leave because she’d only dig her heels in deeper. He couldn’t ask because he didn’t want her to go. She was blurring his lines. She was testing his loyalty.
He was falling in love.

My ‘Blogging Reader’s ARC-Review’ after reading ‘CRY BABY’ by Ginger Scott:
“Cry Baby” is the latest novel by author Ginger Scott. This story takes readers on a journey through the rougher “part of town” while letting us know things aren’t always what they seem. Even though the main male character, Tristan, is in a gang, he does not fit the stereotype of what a violent, heartless gangerbanger would be. Cry Baby offers emotional moments and a tragically beautiful story-line where you will hope ends right for these characters. But it’s not always the case. “Cry Baby” is written from the two P.O.V.’s (point of views) from Tristan Lopez and Riley Rojas.
Tristan Lopez has been a member of a gang in his neighborhood since he was about ten. Coming from the neighborhood he was born into, there wasn’t much choice. It was either the gang or possibly a short life. Dub Lewis, the leader of the gang, gave Tristan the nickname “Cry Baby” when he took him under his wing. Tristan’s dad was best friends with Dub and co-founder of the “Fifty-seven” gang, but he ended up getting locked up thanks to his bad choices and loyalty to gang life. The story continues when Tristan is seventeen and he is completely entrenched into the gang life with nothing else but the twisted sense of loyalty to the dangerous life guiding him.
Riley Rojas is new to the neighborhood. Her and her single father move in, but Riley is left with the responsibility of moving things in on her own since her dad has to work and her mom is gone. She comes across a guy walking by who looks to be around her same age. She asks him for help to move some of the heavier items on the back of her old pick up truck. His name is Tristan. He hesitantly helps her move the stuff, but that’s as far as the “Welcome to the neighborhood” goes.
Once they find themselves at the neighborhood basketball court, all bets are off. Tristan returns to his reality and Riley learns quick that his reality does not include welcoming the new girl who he thinks doesn’t belong there. Tristan must either choose to solely follow down his dark and destructive path or choose to take on a new responsibility at school. He finds himself struggling to keep up his loyalty to the gang and that could put him in danger. His best friend has yet to be accepted, and unfortunately, Tristan finds himself struggling to keep his best friend safe as things go from bad to worse.
If Tristan’s loyalty comes into question, this could mean trouble. Where will his loyalty lie: with his gang and Dubs, or to his new school responsibility that could help both him and and Riley? As the reader, you’ll want to root for Riley and Tristan as individuals, facing the hardest parts of their lives, but also you’ll root for their friendship or whatever they may share. I highly recommend this for those who can enjoy a young adult novel that gives you imperfect characters who are perfect together. Add this to your list and grab your copy. It’s worth the read! ❤
