Fighting For Flight by J.B. Salsbury

Synopsis for ‘Fighting For Flight’ via Goodreads:

What happens when in order to win, you’re forced to lose?
The only daughter of an infamous Las Vegas pimp, Raven Morretti grew up an outsider. Liberated from the neglectful home of her prostitute mother, she finds solace as a mechanic.

With few friends, she’s content with the simple life. Flying under the radar is all she knows, and more than she expects.

Until she catches the eye of local celebrity, UFL playboy Jonah Slade.
Weeks away from his title fight, Jonah is determined to stay focused on everything he’s trained so hard to achieve. Undefeated in the octagon, he’s at the height of his career. But resisting Raven’s effortless allure and uncomplicated nature is a fight he can’t win.

Jonah trades in his bad-boy reputation and puts his heart on the line. But when her father contacts her, setting in motion the ugly truth of her destiny, Jonah must choose. In a high-stakes gamble where love and freedom hang in the balance, a war is waged where the price of losing is a fate worse than death.
Will the hotheaded Jonah be able to restrain his inner fighter to save the woman he loves?

Or will Raven be forced into a life she’s been desperate to avoid?

My ‘Blogging Reader’s Review’ of the Novel ‘Fighting For Flight’:

In life everyone is faced with choices and the consequences of the bad choices can brand us for life, and we can feel the effects of the bad choices others make for us.  In ‘Fighting For Flight’, a young woman who became a prostitute under the deceitful direction of a well-known pimp in Las Vegas named Dominick Morretti, becomes pregnant with his child.  He allows her to give birth only under an evil and manipulative agreement that one day, when this child grows up, she too will have to live that lifestyle and follow in her mother’s footsteps.  In this story you get to read the story from two P.O.V.’s (Point of views) which are of the two main characters: Raven Morretti and Jonah “The Assassin” Slade.

Raven Morretti is the twenty-year old daughter of a pimp and a prostitute who lives in Las Vegas.  She was raised by her prostitute/escort mother who never showed her love, affection or  warmth through out her life growing up.  Her pimp father, Dominick Morretti, was never really around because he had no interest in her, not yet anyway.  Raven is described as having a nice body with curves in the right places, jet-black hair that flowed down her back, aquamarine colored-eyes and the trail of black birds tattooed down her back.  Raven has lived a simple and modest life as a mechanic under a boss named ‘Guy’ who has treated her like she was his own daughter.  One day a new customer walks in needing work down on an older car he owns.  Only thing is he isn’t a regular guy, he’s the very well-known UFL Heavyweight fighter Jonah “The Assassin” Slade.

Now let’s talk about Jonah, shall we? He’s described as a true Alpha-male with the professionally-trained fighting skills to back it up.  He is tall, muscular build, with dark colored short hair and eyes, some tattoos and a strong but handsome face.  He has never committed to a woman but he’s never had a problem getting female groupies who hook-up with him for a mixture of his good looks, money or local-celebrity status.  Things chance for “The Assassin” when he goes to a local mechanic shop to see about getting his classic car worked on.  That’s when he meets a surprisingly beautiful and hot mechanic named Raven.

As their worlds collide and their professional relationship seems to have potential to blossom into something more,  Raven has a haunting history that threatens to completely destroy her present and future life forever.  Raven comes across as a sweet and innocent young woman despite who her parents are and what they do.  This makes Jonah feel a little more protective of her as their feelings grow for each other in the story.  Once certain truths come to light, Raven and Jonah are faced with decisions that could ruin their lives or simply destroy what they’ve both worked hard to become.

Yes, I do recommend this story because it’s not solely about the blossoming relationship between Jonah and Raven but it also keeps you entertained with the guessing game of who are the players that the pimp Dominic has in play inside their lives unbeknownst to them both.  You also meet many supporting characters that are far beyond one dimensional characters such as Blake, Guy and Eve a little.  Dominick is definitely the villain and he is truly someone you will loathe for wanting to use Raven for his sick and twisted controlling-game.  Check it out and be ready for the rest of this series as it continues…

How I imagined Jonah and Raven while reading ‘Fighting For Flight’ 🙂

Jonah Slade and Raven Morretti

Milena’s thoughts(Raven’s mother):  No, I can’t hold her.  If I do, I’ll never let her go.

Jonah “The Assassin” Slade’s thoughtsWomen in the town are overly aware of themselves.  I know there are exceptions.  But what are the chances that an exception who looks like a rule is about to push through my walls?

Jonah “The Assassin” Slade’s thoughts:  There is no working this girl out of my system.  From the moment she walked out of Guy’s Garage, she burrowed in deep.  This whole time I’ve been kicking and fighting against her pull.  What if I just let it go?

Jonah “The Assassin” Slade’s thoughts:  …face my fears and take a shot at a relationship or let her go.  She’ll go on living her life until someone worthy of her love comes along.  Oh, hell no!

Raven Morretti’s thoughts:  I’ve been running in the opposite direction as my mom’s life since I knew she was a prostitute.  I’m a mechanic and a virgin.  Can’t get more opposite than that.

Raven and Blake(Jonah’s friend):
“Jonah’s free to date, er, um, be with whoever he wants.”-Raven.
“Jonah’s a lot of things. But from what I’ve seen tonight, he’s not free-at least, not anymore.”-Blake.

Jonah and Raven:
“Promise me you’ll stay away from Dominick Morretti.”-Jonah.
“That, I can promise.”-Raven.

Jonah “The Assassin” Slade’s thoughts:   To think that I could experience this all-consuming lust, as well as the soul-shackling love that I would die to keep, is life changing.  This tiny girl who works on cars, laughs at stupid jokes, and blushes at the slightest flirtation is mine.

Raven Morretti’s thoughts:  I want him, but more than that, I want him to be happy-to have a life with a woman who can love him the way he deserves to be loved: a woman free from the ugliness of my reality.

Raven Morretti’s thoughts:  First, Jonah loves me.  And, second, I don’t know what the future will bring, but whatever happens, I won’t be facing it alone.
