The Synopsis & My ‘Blogging Reader’s Review’ after reading  an ARC-Early Copy of ‘IT AIN’T ME, BABE’:

After reading the synopsis for author Tillie Cole’s upcoming novel, I knew I had to read and review it.  The storyline for ‘It Ain’t Me, Babe’ is about two very different worlds, one being a motorcycle club that deals in dangerous and illegal business and the other, a secluded cult of people ruled under a man known as the Prophet David and his followers.  The story is told in the two main-characters P.O.V.’s(point of views); one is a young woman known in her cult as ‘Salome’ but also goes by ‘Mae’ and then there is River who is known to the MC (motorcycle club) world as ‘Styx’.

The story begins when two young children meet by chance for a short time in a secluded, wooded area.  The eleven-year old boy named River was there with his father, who at the time, happened to be a dangerous leader of an MC(motorcycle club) known as Hades Hangmen.  He comes across a young girl with beautiful pale skin, black hair and blue wolf-like eyes, who looked so sad behind a high fence in the middle of nowhere.  River happens to have a speech impediment that leaves him dependent on others to translate his sign-language and only a few have heard his actual voice. Something about meeting this young-beauty makes him want to make the effort to speak. After their brief encounter, they share a small innocent kiss and before River must leave, he asks the young girl what her name is.  He begs her for this bit of information. The young girl who is about to run away simply replies,”My name is Sin, we are all sin.”  They both part ways, to return to their very different worlds, never to see each other again…

The story then continues fifteen years later…

Salome is in her early twenties and is a beautiful woman now with the same jet-black hair, blue eyes and pale beautiful skin. Unfortunately for her, the cult that she has known as her family all of her life, views her beauty as a bad thing.  They have come to label Salome and three other women in the cult as ‘The Cursed’.  Salome is promised to marry the Prophet David who is the leader of their cult and is set to become his seventh-wife.  After having to deal with so much for so many years, Salome is ready to break free of all she knows.  She needs to do as her sister told her to. Run.   The world outside of the fence that surrounds the commune, has been described to Salome and everyone in her cult as being  full of nothing but sin and evil.  She has no choice but to leave her home and escape into the outside world of sin. By doing so, she finds that things outside of the fence that has caged her all of her life, has so much more than she ever could imagine.

River ‘Styx’ Nash is in his mid-twenties and is now the leader of the Hades Hangmen MC.  He is tall, has dark short-hair, tattooed, built and ruggedly-handsome but has a deadly reputation that is known through out the MC world.  Along with his deadly reputation and their illegal business dealings, he has been given the name of the ‘Hangmen Mute’ because he never talks.  No one has dared to question his leadership because of his speech impediment because of how dangerous and deadly he is and how well he is at being his chapter’s leader.  He never gets close to anyone and the only one who knows so much about him is his best friend and VP to the Hades Hangmen MC,  Kyler ‘Ky’ Willis.

So much begins to happen in the story. Styx’s path crosses with a face he never thought he’d see again but one he had thought about many times. Then, there happens to be someone interrupting the illegal business dealings of the Hades Hangmen MC, for which they start trying to figure out who’s behind it. ‘Styx’s life becomes a dangerous roller coaster ride filled with suspense, mystery and emotional battles.

This story was very enjoyable, despite its really dark moments.  I’ve yet to come across a story like this before so the uniqueness of the MC world and secret cult world and the dynamics that blend the two, make it a true suspenseful story.  Will ‘Salome/Mae’ ever be completely free of the cult? Can ‘River/Styx’ deal with the emotional battles he’s faced with?  Can the Hades Hangmen find out who is interrupting their business dealings before it’s too late?  I definitely recommend this novel and truly hope it becomes a novel series because there are so many great characters with so much depth and potential, that I’d hate to see them go to waste.  And, I must add that I LOVE the fact that the story happens to mention the city I love, Austin, Texas. Extra kudos points for location and characters! Yes, it’s gritty, dark, violent at times but it also brings forth great moments about fate, love, hope and sacrifice.  Great story, indeed.

Small warning: The story is of the New Adult genre and contains strong-sexual content at times, mature situations, violence, and taboo topics such as a cult lifestyle and abuse.  Recommended only for readers- ages 18+.

MEMORABLE QUOTES & LINES FROM ‘IT AIN’T ME, BABE’

River ‘young Styx’s thoughts:  From my new position, I could see her hair was as black as coal and her skin so pale.  I’d never seen no one like her before.  Then again, I didn’t know many kids my own age; no one did in club life.  There was Kyler, of course, but he was my best friend, my club brother.

Young River ‘Styx’ first talks to Salome ‘Mae’:  “Wh-wh-who a-are y-y-you?”  As I fell back in shock, my eyes widened.  I’d never been able to do that before, speak to a total stranger.  My hands fidgeted in excitement.  I could talk to this chick!  I could talk… that made her number three.

River ‘young Styx’s thoughts:  Most folks in my world, I knew, would see my signing as a weakness, so my pop told me I had to toughen up and use my fists instead of words.  Now folks just thought I was dangerous.  Like Ky said, I was born to be feared: the Hangmen Mute.

Young River and Young Salome: “A n-name! I’m be-be-begging you!”-(River)
The chick stopped dead still, looked up at me- no, she looked through me- her blue eyes weirdly wide, and whispered, “My name is Sin. We are all sin.”-(Salome)

Styx’s thoughts: Who the hell wanted a stammering, fuckin’ mute as a leader?  But the brothers voted unanimous.  Hades Hangmen would stay with the rightful historic line.  At the age of twenty-six, I found myself Prez of the most notoriously lethal MC in all the States.

Mae’s thoughts:  I had never been kissed before or since.  He was my only secret… my biggest ever sin.  He had become almost like a dream to me.

Styx’s thoughts:  And it killed me knowing she didn’t belong here.  For the first time in my life, I wanted to do right by someone, and her being a part of this club, a part of me, wasn’t doing right by her.
