“Memphis” is an exciting new book by the amazing author Ginger Scott. In this story, there’s definitely so much more to a name. This is more than just a boxing story, it’s a story about life and learning to find hope in the midst of everything meant to tear you down. “Memphis” is written from the two P.O.V.’s (point of views) from Olivia “Liv” Valentine and Memphis.
In the boxing world, the name Valentine inspired many, intimidated other boxers but there was one person who knew the truth behind the name. She never admired the name or the people associated with it, her parents. Especially since everything the outside world knew about the Valentine’s was all make believe. For Liv Valentine, her childhood was lonely and her parents were dysfunctional in their own ways.
Olivia “Liv” Valentine has a mother who roped in Liv’s father when he had a rising and incredible boxing career. The loving and protective father he conveyed toward outsiders was not how Liv remembered it. When she’s forced to return home to the place she fled as soon as she was old enough to do so, she must face her past, the truth of her present, and a questionable future. But what she did not expect was Memphis.
An up-and-coming boxer who simply goes by the name of Memphis, trains at Archie Valentine’s gym under the watchful eye of Liv’s Uncle Leo. He seems to have the heart and drive to go far. Liv’s mom and uncle can both see it and are waiting to cash in on it. But Liv slowly begins to see that there’s more to the man with the heart for boxing. After being burned in her last relationship and knowing the history between her parents, she tries hard to stay away from Memphis.
Can Liv stay away from Memphis or is she destined to follow the destructive footsteps of her cold mother and her ex-boxer father? How will Liv deal with the painful truths about how ruthless her family truly may be? Will Memphis ever find out more about his past? This novel is an incredible story about endurance, overcoming difficult challenges and finding hope when everything around you is fighting hard to destroy it for you. Liv and Memphis have so much that could tear them apart but once you learn about their characters, you can’t help but root for them till the final bell rings.
