GHOSTBUSTERS FILM SERIES: TWO COMPANION FILMS IN THE WORKS!

We already know that a Ghostbusters reboot with an all female lead cast is set to begin filming this summer(2015) with a release date set for 2016 by Paul Feig. The original Ghostbuster film’s star Dan Aykroyd and original director Ivan Reitman of Ghostbusters 1 & 2, have taken important roles in a newly-established production company formed by Sony called “Ghostcorps”. The production company will be a huge part of the expansion of the Ghostbusters brand which is said to include films, TV shows, merchandise and more.
With this new company by Sony, the Ghostbusters series is set to begin producing a second companion reboot film that will star an all male lead cast. The Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony Russo(directors of Captain America: The Winter Soldier) are said to possibly produce and direct the all male lead reboot film. Channing Tatum is on board with partners Peter Kiernan and Reid Carolin to produce the reboot. Tatum is also said to be hoping to score a staring role in the all male lead film. Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) is writing the script for the all male lead Ghostbusters reboot.

Ghostbusters 3 was a rumor for a long time but earlier in 2014 it was confirmed that a reboot would definitely be coming to a theater near you in the near future. What has been officially confirmed is that the first Ghostbuster reboot’s crew will consist of an all female cast! Some of the rumors that have floated around before the cast was announced were that: some of the original cast will return or that Oscar(Sigourney Weaver’s character’s son)will become a Ghostbuster now as an adult.
What has been shared via Twitter from the film’s director @PaulFeig is this: “It’s official. I’m making a new Ghostbusters & writing it with @katiedippold & yes, it will star hilarious women. That’s who I’m gonna call.”
The original director Ivan Reitman was on board to direct this latest installment but he stepped down after the passing of the original Ghostbuster and writer of the film, Harold Ramis who played Egon Spegler. Reitman stayed a part of the film as a producer. Filming is set to begin in the summer of 2015 in Boston and possibly New York City.
UPDATES & CAMEO NEWS: Chris Hemsworth has been cast to field the calls for the all female-cast of Ghostbusters as the receptionist. Cameos by the original cast members Sigourney Weaver, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts have been confirmed to happen!
PLOT: Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy play a pair of unheralded authors, Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, who write a book positing that ghosts are real. Flash forward a few years and Erin(Wiig) lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia U. (Like the original, the story takes place in New York City, even though it’s being shot in Boston.) Which is pretty sweet, until her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia. Erin reunites with Abby(McCarthy) and the other two proton pack-packing phantom wranglers, and she gets some sweet revenge when ghosts invade Manhattan and she and her team have to save the world.” – via: BostonHerald

Ghostbusters 3 is no longer a part of the rumor mill. If there will in fact be two Ghostbusters films coming in the next year or so, is seeming very likely. The first reboot film has been confirmed(all female lead cast version) and the second film(a possible all male lead cast) is in the works. The original director Ivan Reitman decided to only be a part of the film as a producer after the passing of the original Ghostbuster and writer of the film, Harold Ramis who played Egon Spegler. No word yet on confirmed cast, plot or when the film will begin shooting. Brothers Joe and Anthony Russo, are said to be teaming up to direct and produce the film. Drew Pearce is writing the script. Joining partners Peter Kiernan and Reid Carolin, is Channing Tatum as part of the producer team. Tatum as well as fellow actor Chris Pine are rumored to be possibly staring in lead roles of this reboot film. As more information becomes available, I’ll update it here.
Current Rumors(Not confirmed) for this Reboot: Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt will star in the film, there may be a male/female lead Ghostbuster cast, original Ghostbuster cast members to join the new reboot cast, more Ghostbuster crossover films may be in the works between the two reboots.
