Awake by Natasha Preston

The Synopsis:

Scarlett doesn’t remember anything before the age of five. Her parents say it’s from the trauma of seeing her house burn down, and she accepts the life they’ve created for her without question—until a car accident causes Scarlett to start remembering pieces of an unfamiliar past.

When a new guy moves into town, Scarlett feels an instant spark. But Noah knows the truth of Scarlett’s past, and he’s determined to shield her from it…because Scarlett grew up in a cult called Eternal Light, controlled by her biological parents.

And they want her back.

My ‘Blogging Reader’s ARC-Review’ after reading ‘AWAKE’ by Natasha Preston:

“Awake” is a YA novel by Author Natasha Preston and is the first novel I’ve read from this author. This young adult tale falls under the categories of  contemporary romance, suspense, and mystery genres while touching on the subject of secret cult lifestyle. This novel is written from the two main characters’ P.O.V.’s(point of views) Scarlett and Noah.

This novel was one of those rare moments where I couldn’t decide what to rate it and truly grasp what I felt about the story itself at first. Yes, there were a few moments that I would’ve liked a little more to the story but I usually base my ratings on the story itself. This novel revolves around a young teenage-girl by the name of Scarlett Garner. Her life seems to be going well and everything around her seems pretty ordinary. She has two loving parents, her brother Jeremy and her lively-best friend Imogen. Scarlett isn’t able to remember anything before the age of 4. As little snippets of memories flash in her mind, she becomes curious about knowing more and learning about her lost brief memories. The story quickly picks up and secrets begin to unravel and flashes of lost memories begin to awaken in her mind again.

At the beginning of the story, Scarlett Garner meets a new guy in class by the name of Noah. He seems to only have eyes for her from the start but this makes complete sense as to “why” as you continue to read on and is explained later in the story. I didn’t find their quick attraction and the speedy growth of their feelings to be far-fetched at all. “Instalove” does actually happen in real life so that wasn’t as unbelievable to grasp. I enjoyed the characters and how Noah was such a sweet, understanding, attentive and supportive boyfriend. Who wouldn’t fall quick for that?

The story was gripping mostly in the 2nd half of the book till the end because the characters grow closer and secrets from Scarlett’s past and the memories she lost begin to surface. Who can Scarlett truly trust? Who has lied for good reasons and who lied to get what they wanted from Scarlett? And what happens when the cult is determined to get her back while threatening everything that matters most to Scarlett? Some of the short-comings of this novel were how a few of the characters fell short in some of the dialogue but the novel itself delivered a decently good story. Not everyone is a fan of instalove romance but I don’t mind them at all. This romance between Scarlett and Noah definitely didn’t completely unrealistic. I enjoyed this and I recommend it for those that enjoy a suspenseful novel, with romance and some twists-and-turns. Check it out if you’re into a suspenseful-mystery from the Young Adult genre.
