The Synopsis for ‘CONTROL’ (via: Goodreads) :

Laura Marie Altom’s heart-stirring new romance will have you believing in the power of love—and passion—to heal even the most wounded souls.

Never again. Fleeing her hometown to escape an abusive marriage, Ella Patton swears she has surrendered to a man for the last time. But while living under a new name, she meets a kind, handsome stranger who seems different—and will be moving on soon, making Ella reckless enough to break her rules. With a kiss, the stranger opens the door to desires Ella believed she would never know. Then he makes an unexpected proposal.

A dot-com billionaire from humble beginnings, Liam Stone is a man whose past has made him compassionate yet guarded—much like the beautiful, secretive woman he stumbles upon in a remote Southern town. Though he intends only a dalliance, when the time comes to return home to San Francisco, Liam cannot bear the thought of leaving her behind. But when he tries to entice her to join him, he finds the tables turning dizzingly fast. Suddenly a little seduction becomes a huge battle for one thing: control.

My ‘Blogging Reader’s Review’ after reading ‘CONTROL’ (Shame Series Book #1)’:

‘Control’ is the first novel of the Shame Series by Laura Marie Altom.   I was not familiar with this author when I first received this ARC copy but now I will be looking forward to reading the next novel in this series.  ‘Control’ is written in the two P.O.V.’s(point of views) belonging to the main characters of the story: Ella Patton and Liam Stone.

Ella Patton ran away from an abusive and controlling rich husband, parents who didn’t believe her about the abuse and her identity as Ella.  She transforms herself into a girl named ‘Julie’ who lives struggles to survive on her own with a job serving food.  She has two new friends, Willow and Nathan, who have no idea about who ‘Julie’ really is or the past she ran away from.  Everything was going well for her, that was until he walked in to her world.

Liam Stone needed time away from his demanding and successful billionaire life, thanks to his Zoogle business.  When his jet is down for service, he decides to get a room at a less-than-modest motel in a middle-of-nowhere little town.  When he goes to get a quick bite to eat, he first sees her.  When he sees her again at a local bar later on, they decide to leave and make it a fun night.  There is just one problem, this girl he meets at the bar who says her name is ‘Ella’ obviously has issues and secrets but there is just something about her that he can’t let her go.

When Liam gives her an offer that sounds hard to resist, she hesitates.  She finds out that he isn’t just some ruggedly, handsome, hard-working man, he is a billionaire success.  And Liam, he wants to make her his, through a contract that is.  Liam doesn’t do relationships and Ella/Julie, can’t do them because of her past.  Liam has childhood memories that haunt him even now as an adult, causing him to never want to get married or have a real-emotional connection with any woman.

They are both broken in one way or another but can they give each other a real chance to help fix each other?  Can love grow or will heartbreak be inevitable?  This story takes you on emotional roller coaster because both characters find it hard to handle what they feel for each other and protect themselves because of the past scars.  I do recommend that story and will be ready for the next that follows.  This story ends somewhat on a cliffhanger and I can already see that the next book will probably have the potential to be darker and more emotional based on how this one ends.  Check out ‘Control’ when you are looking for a new book to read.  The conclusion to the cliffhanger for this novel, will be in December and the name to the Shame Series-Book #2 will be ‘Possess.’

MY BLOGGING READER’S STAR RATING: ‘CONTROL’  4 out of 5 stars:

How I imagined Ella(Julie) and Liam while reading ‘CONTROL’:

MEMORABLE QUOTES & LINES FROM ‘CONTROL’

Ella’s thoughts:  To say that my husband had done a number on me would be the understatement of the century. He’d taken my wide-eyed belief in Happily Ever Afters that had been instilled by a lifetime of Disney and shredded my heart and soul.  Now, there was nothing left.

Liam’s thoughts: He made me miss the girl I used to be.  Ella.  An always smiling beauty queen who hadn’t believed in the devil.  Only now I knew he was real, and no matter the personal cost, I couldn’t afford to have an unguarded soul.

Liam’s thoughts:  I liked that about her- her innocence.  The fact that she probably didn’t even know that she’d turned me down had come as one of the biggest surprises I’d had in a while.  And as such, one of the biggest turn-ons.  I wouldn’t call myself a man-slut, but I never lack for female company.  Funny thing was, that hadn’t always been the case.

Ella’s quote:  “I just need you to be you- the guy who drew me a bath and let me wear his T-shirt and pajama bottoms.  The guy who yelled at me to get out of the cold and who refused to do me on the principle that it wouldn’t be right.  I liked that guy.”

Ella’s thoughts about Ella/Julie:  Ella the Homecoming Queen, the Honor Student, the girl who’d always followed the rules, felt compelled to be a part of this productivity.  Julie, the dead girl, wanted to hide in a corner- preferably, a well-lit corner.

Ella’s thoughts: Outside, a storm had rolled in.  Rain hammered the windows, and the wind and ocean roared.  I worried this deep contentment was me being delusional.  If Liam and I ventured beyond these glass walls, would reality pound us harder than the waves crashing against the shore?
