The Broken by Shelley Coriell

The Synopsis & My ‘Blogging Reader’s Review’ after reading  an ARC-Early Copy of ‘THE BROKEN (The Apostles series book #1)’:

I’m glad to have been given the chance to review the ARC early-copy of this story.  I try to occasionally steer away from the romance and YA novels that I usually review, and delve into something dark and thrilling when I can.  This story ‘The Broken’ by Shelley Coriell is definitely a change of scenery and story, as the main characters hunt to find a serial killer known as the ‘Broadcast Butcher’.  In this novel, you will get to read the story from about five different P.O.V.’s(point of views).  The two main characters: Katrina Erickson(Kate Johnson) and F.B.I. Agent Hayden Reed, also you get P.O.V.’s from Detective Lottie, Kate’s friend ‘Smokey’ and The Broadcast Butcher.

Beautiful brown haired, green eyed-Katrina Erickson, is a former broadcast journalist who’s been out of the news casting-limelight for the past three years, after surviving an attack that almost killed her.  After the local law enforcement failed to protect or believe a lot of what she told them,  she needed to do something about it on her own. Katrina decided to do the one thing that kept her in control of her own safety, she left town and went into hiding. Three years after her initial attack, she now resides as a caretaker for a former Vet.  But when broadcast journalists begin to meet a gruesome death at the hands of an illusive-serial killer that has been named as the ‘Broadcast Butcher’, Katrina is shocked by the similarities to her own attack years earlier.  Katrina, who now goes by the name of Katy Johnson, decides it’s time to come out of hiding to help find the butcher before another broadcaster is murdered.

F.B.I. Agent Hayden Reed, is a part of a Special Criminal Investigative Unit, nicknamed ‘The Apostles’ by the media, who are the best of the best.  Agent Reed has made it his mission to catch and stop the ‘Broadcast Butcher’.  He has investigated every lead and clue non-stop in order to solve these crimes, to the point that he knows it inside and out.  When he teams up with the only surviving victim, Katrina, he realizes that there may be more to these murders than what anyone could have guessed.

This was a dark thriller that will keep you guessing ‘Who is the Butcher’ through out the story.  There is a little romance intertwined but the suspense and the story surrounding the Butcher takes the forefront.  Can Agent Reed, with Katrina’s help in the investigation, solve this mystery before another person becomes a victim at the hands of the Broadcast Butcher?  Have Agent Hayden Reed and Katrina met their match, in each other? I do recommend this novel for those readers who want a thrilling story that doesn’t shy away from touching some really dark and eerie moments in order to keep you at the edge of your seat.  Check out ‘The Broken’ and see if you can solve the mystery of who The Butcher is before the end of the story.

Small warning: The story is from the Romantic Suspense and Thriller genres.  The story has some gruesome detailed killing scenarios and victims vary in age.  I’d recommend only for Adult readers ages 18+.

How I imagined Katrina/Katy and Hayden while reading ‘The Broken’.

1 collage 2

Katrina Erickson:  She didn’t miss the crazy world of broadcast news and had no regrets that she hadn’t seen a newscast in almost three years, not since she’d been the news.

Katy Johnson:  She jammed all but the leathers into the bags and threw in her brown contacts and hair dye.  Meager belongings compared to her on-air days, a time when she wore a different face.  A face not yet hacked by a madman.  A madman who hadn’t stopped after the butcher job on her.

Agent Hayden Reed’s thoughts:  Speculation did not solve murder investigations bathed in blood.  That’s why he was here.  Time to do his job.  Time to become the monster.

Katy Johnson:  She ended up using Smokey’s computer to go online and learn about the Broadcaster Butcher murders.  She’d discovered each attack mirrored hers except for one thing: she survived.

The Broadcast Butcher:  “To power,” he said.  “And to those of us who have it.”  He swirled the glass of lush, red liquid.  When he’d taken Shayna Thomas’s life, he’d taken her power.

Katrina and Hayden: “I didn’t report the attack, Agent Reed, because it wouldn’t make a difference.”
This final statement had no force, no fire. The absence of anger spoke volumes.
“I see,” Hayden said.
A flare fired in Katrina’s eyes as she yanked her shirt over her breast. “What the hell do you see?”
“I see a woman who doesn’t trust authorities, who was let down by those meant to protect her.”
His head dipped in a sober nod. “I see a woman who no longer believes in justice.”

Agent Hayden Reed to Katrina: “If you try to run, I’ll catch you,” Agent Reed said as if he could read her mind. “You realize that, don’t you? I’ll find you and keep you safe until the Butcher is behind bars. Don’t fight me on this.”

Katrina’s thoughts: The mighty Agent Reed had obviously never run across someone like her. She fought monsters in her childhood, scrapped and scraped her way through college, and battled her way to a coveted anchor spot in broadcast news before age thirty. She may have been on the run the past two years, but that didn’t change who she was at the core.

Hayden and Katrina: “You’re smiling,” Hayden said.
“Does my smile bother you?”-(Katrina)
“It’s an anolomy,” he explained referring to her smile.
“And you notice anomalies?”-(Katrina)
“I notice everything about you, Kate.”-(Hayden)

Agent Hayden Reed:   The volcano in Hayden bubbled and shot fire.  It overflowed and burned.  Never before had he wanted to kill, but God help him, he wanted to now.
