About the Biopic film ‘Cesar Chavez: An American Hero’:
Chronicling the birth of a modern American movement, this story tells of the famed civil rights leader and labor organizer torn between his duties as a husband and father and his commitment to securing a living wage for farm workers. Passionate but soft-spoken, farmer turned activist Cesar Chavez, embraced non-violence as he battled greed and prejudice in his struggle to bring dignity to people. Chavez inspired millions of Americans from all walks of life who never worked on a farm, to fight for social justice. His triumphant journey is a remarkable testament to the power of one individual’s ability to change the world.-info. source: IMDb
A History Refresher on who this American Hero was…
American Cesar Chavez (1927-1993) was a prominent union leader and labor organizer. Hardened by his early experience as a migrant worker, Chavez founded the National Farm Workers Association in 1962. His union joined with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee in its first strike against grape growers in California, and the two organizations later merged to become the United Farm Workers. Stressing nonviolent methods, Chavez drew attention for his causes via boycotts, marches and hunger strikes. Despite conflicts with the Teamsters union and legal barriers, he was able to secure raises and improve conditions for farm workers in California, Texas, Arizona and Florida.
A great video of America Ferrera and Gabriel Mann filmed in Austin, Texas prior to the screening at SXSW. They explain their characters and tell about who Cesar Chavez was. He was a regular person, a Chicano, a father and husband, who stood up for civil rights and became an icon in the process:
